2019 Awards Celebrate Science and Innovation in Victoria

At a special awards ceremony - celebrating science excellence in Victoria, the recipients of the prestigious Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation and the Victoria Fellowships were announced.

The Hon. Martin Pakula MP, Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade presided over the awards, held at the Investment Centre Victoria on Tuesday, 19 November 2019. Click here for the Media Release.

2019 Victoria Prize for Science & Innovation

The 2019 Victoria Prize for Science & Innovation celebrates leadership, determination and creativity. 

It also highlights the many ways in which research & development of international significance are conducted in Victoria.

The 2019 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in the Physical sciences was awarded to Professor Anthony Burkitt, the University of Melbourne, in recognition of his work to develop a bionic eye and provide artificial vision to visually impaired people who could previously see. The 2019 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in the Life sciences was awarded to Professor Michael Berk, Deakin University, in recognition of his research and discovery of risk factors, novel therapies, and preventative treatments for mental health problems. Watch the video here.

 

2019 Victoria Fellows

Victoria Fellowships were awarded to 12 early career researchers to assist them with an international study mission – six in the life sciences and six in the physical sciences.

Victoria Fellows will commence their international visits between November 2019 and November 2020.
