veski awards in design 2008
veski has provided funds to support two key design initiatives during 2008 - at Monash University and RMIT University - through its Awards in Design program.
At Monash University the veski award funds a visiting Professor of Design (Material and Making) – Nader Tehrani – as part of the newly established discipline of Architecture, which was launched by Minister for Planning, Hon Justin Madden MP in early July 2008.
Internationally acclaimed Tehrani is principal of the Boston-based architecture and design firm Office dA and an adjunct Professor of the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Monash University's new Architecture program sits within the Faculty of Art and Design. Led by Faculty Dean Professor John Redmond, the program aims to place significant emphasis on creativity and innovation, and be unique for placing architecture in an art and design context.
The veski award in design also includes a short term scholarship for a Monash student to visit Professor Tehrani at MIT.
Whilst visiting Melbourne in July 2008, Nader Tehrani presented a free public lecture at the State Library of Victoria as part of the Monash Architecture Series 2008.
Co-sponsored by veski, this lecture fulfilled veski’s brief to share Professor Tehrani’s expertise with the broader Victorian design profession. Tehrani was accompanied by Hailim Suh from Studio Himma, who also delivered a separate public lecture at the State Library of Victoria as part of the Monash Architecture Series 2008 program.
The second veski award went to RMIT University to allow a number of students to represent Melbourne at a series of overseas architecture biennale events around the world in 2008.
The Award allows three students to represent Melbourne at the International Architecture Biennale of Venice in September, 2008; three students to attend the Architecture Biennale of Seville in October 2008; and one student to represent Melbourne at the Berlin Aedes International Design Research Campus later this year.
A public event to showcase the work of these students, here in Melbourne, is in the planning stage.
