Jane Ryan speaks at Women in Biotechnology Luncheon

New veski board member Dr Jane Ryan was among the guest speakers at BioMelbourne Network's 5th annual Women in Biotechnology Luncheon to celebrate the incredible achievement of women who work in biotechnology in Victoria.
On Friday 31 May, the veski chief executive officer Ms Julia L Page hosted veski family members at the event which attracted more than 320 women in the Myer Mural Hall; the largest turnout since the event's conception.
Michelle Gallagher, CEO of the BioMelbourne Network, opened the proceedings with an introduction on the theme of 'change'. New veski board member Dr Jane Ryan, Vice President, Product Development & Strategic Marketing of Biota Pharmaceuticals Inc, was the first guest speaker and was asked about recent changes in her working career, specifically her new role with veski.
Dr Ryan said she was honoured to have been accepted onto the veski board and that she hopes she is able to contribute to the organisation. She made reference to veski's new inspiring schools program, the reputation of the veski innovation fellows and their scientific contributions to Victoria.
She also added that women are central to change, and offered examples from her own past experience illustrating where embracing organisational change and looking for the positives can lead to sucess. Dr Ryan also discussed her working methodology of 'looking for the grey areas' and the importance of experimenting with ideas.
When asked if there was a specific time during her career where she was inspired to change, Dr Ryan made mention of a working relationship that helped her realise her own abilities to think strategically. Before this Dr Ryan believed that everybody thought that way, but once this potential was highlighted, it started her on the path she has since followed.
Other guest speakers included Dominique Fisher, Non-Exective Chairman of Circadian Technologies Ltd, and Professor Cathy Foley, Chief of CSIRO Materials Systems and Engineering, both sharing their experiences and insights.
The event concluded with an excellent opportunity for attendees to continue networking.
